He goes out with the boys who hunt. I watch him go and don’t say anything. I don’t know that I can say anything anymore. I watch from the window. It is always the same.

The overcome mill about the street. They cannot talk or walk properly. We are told that even if the overcome weren’t fixed, they would still shamble like that, they would still be mute. We are told and we believe. It is humane, we believe. I watch from the window. I watch Joey with the boys who hunt; with one in particular. They stand close together in the way that Joey and I did. The way we would get right up next so we could feel the heat off each other’s body like some psychic lust. The boy gives Joey a bat and they walk off. Joey holds the bat like he’s held one before, like it belongs in his hand. He doesn’t tremble like he does when we sit on the couch.

When he comes back that night I am still at the window. He doesn’t have the bat anymore. There is a sheen of sweat on him. His eyes are fierce. He doesn’t say anything. Just curls up on the couch. I stay at the window all night, watching the overcome and the boys who hunt them and I don’t think about anything.
